After adding an email sharing feature for tweets last month, microblogging site Twitter now makes Instagram-like photo filters available to its iOS- and Android-powered mobile device users.

This move follows right in the wake of Facebook-owned Instagram ceasing its support of Twitter, removing the ability for Instagram users to display their photos within their Twitter timelines. According to Instagram CEO Kevin Systrom the prime reason behind that tactic is to drive user traffic back to its own site.

Twitter joined forces with photo editing solutions provider Aviary, to make the filters and effects available to users. By utilising the latest version of the Twitter app for Android and iOS, users are now able to edit and enhance the photos they upload to the social networking site, right from within the Twitter app.

Twitter’s new image enhancement tools include:
  • Filters - Apply one of eight filters that range from the classic black & white through to vintage and cinematic. These allow you to easily add a new look and feel to your photos.
  • Only showcase what is important - Users can also crop images or perform a pinch-to-zoom in order to focus in on one element in the photo.
  • Auto-enhance - Novices can simply touch up their images with balanced light and colors, by tapping one button (the wand).

In other social networking related news, Google and 8ta recently announced Free Zone powered by Google, which provides 8ta subscribers with access to mobile web search and feature-phone-friendly versions of Gmail and Google+ with zero data charges.
