As the world becomes increasingly connected, an increase in data consumption and storage requirements is inevitable. Changes in data consumption patterns have also led to the evolution of storage technology. According to International Data Corporation (IDC), there has been a significant shift from the use of hard disk drives (HDD) to solid state drives (SSD). IDC forecasts worldwide SSD revenues to grow at a CAGR of 14.8% between now and 2021. ADATA country manager for South Africa, Tony Yu, says that while SSDs have a number of advantages over HDDs, this does not mean the latter will disappear.

“The SSD has a number of advantages over the HDD, such as being lighter, quieter, faster and more shock and vibration resistant,” he says. “They also outperform traditional HDDs as they have no internal mechanical components and, therefore, have a higher resistance to shock, vibration and extreme temperatures.” Silence, low power consumption, and improved data protection are also key benefits of SSD technology. Additionally, SSDs with PCIe interface are particularly popular among gamers as they provide superior read/write speed, enabling them to react without lag.

Yu adds that there is still a market for HDD. “HDDs are suitable for those who need to store large files, like movies, videos, MP4 and photos. For those individuals concerned that they can get damaged easily, we now also have rugged HDDs with superior waterproof and dustproof protection and large capacities. HDDs are also generally more affordable than SSDs.”

SSDs are suitable for both gaming and general use. “For gamers or PC enthusiasts who require high stability and performance may purchase PCIe SSDs with the 3D NAND solution. For general users who want to boot quickly or process daily works, SATA SSDs are the best option. They support most desktops and notebooks, including ultrabooks,” he says. “We work closely with the main controller manufacturers and ensure our SSDs are equipped with the latest interfaces and technologies. For users who require improved performance, durability and longevity, coupled with less noise and vibration, I would certainly recommend the SSD. However, if price is your biggest consideration, then the HDD is your better option.”
