LG’s D2542P display enables users to bring the 3D cinema experience home, as it doesn’t merely display 3D content, but can also convert 2D images into 3D as well.

The use of glossy black plastic seems to be in vogue with monitor manufacturers these days, with LG utilising it to good effect on the base stand and the front panels of its classy looking display. This elegant display measures 546 x 57 x 342 mm and weighs just more than 3 kg, packing in a D-Sub, DVI-D, and HDMI port, but no onboard speakers.

This 25" monitor sports a full HD (1920 x 1080) resolution and 5 000 000:1 contrast ratio,  delivering bright, vibrant colours and highly detailed images when used with 3D turned off.

For your 3D viewing pleasure

When we turned 3D on, however, we found it best to scale the resolution down from full HD to 720p (1280 x 720) or even 1024 x 768, since we noticed a lot of blurry shadow effects on fast moving objects (ghosting) or the occasional blank segments on the screen whilst viewing 3D content in full HD. Unlike Nintendo’s 3DS, it does require 3D glasses, and LG generously includes one pair of 3D glasses along with a handy pair of clip-on 3D specs for people with glasses.

Native 3D content, such as 3D movie trailers and clips on YouTube’s 3D channel, displayed faultlessly at lower resolutions. However, the monitor’s 2D to 3D conversion functionality was less impressive, often prone to the same kind of ghosting effects present when viewing native 3D content in 1080p.

The RRP of the D2542P display is R3 700, which is a premium above what you’ll pay for a normal full HD monitor such as LG's Flatron IPS236V-PN (R2 000) or Acer’s Olympics P238HL LCD monitor (R3 000), and only worth the investment if 3D is a must-have feature for you.
