Heavy summer rainfall has wreaked havoc across parts of Gauteng and the Western Cape this December, resulting in significant damage to local infrastructure, property, and vehicles. With the South African Weather Service issuing a warning for more rain and the further risk of flooding, Bryte Insurance shares some tips to help safeguard people and possessions.

Safety tips during a thunder and lightning storm

1. Switch off and unplug all electronic devices, especially during thunderstorms. The surge from a lightning strike can damage your devices.
2. Park your vehicle under cover to avoid hail strikes and damage from falling debris. This cover should not be a tree, as strong winds may lead to falling branches damaging your car.

Safety tips during heavy rains/flooding

1. If you reside in an area prone to flooding, invest in sandbags to help divert 'runoff' water away from your house.
2. Move your highest-value items to the upper-level floors or top shelves if possible. Keep your important documents, such as ID documents, passports, birth certificates etc., in a water-resistant container.
3. Turn off your electricity supply to avoid or at least minimise the risk of electrical shock.
4. If flooding could compromise your safety or the integrity of your home, consider whether evacuating your home is the safest course of action.
5. Remember that vehicles, even off-road capable 4x4 bakkies, can be swept away by swiftly moving water.
6. If you are caught in a flooded area, and your car stalls or is stuck, do not attempt to drive out of the area. Rather, get yourself to safety.
