Hot on the heels of its recently announced AMD FX desktop CPUs for general users, AMD today announced the launch of its AMD Opteron 6200 and 4200 Series processors, formerly code-named Interlagos and Valencia respectively.

The company explained that the new Opteron processors, which are aimed at enterprise customers, will deliver 84% higher performance, as part of a comprehensive processor portfolio that ranges from four to 16-core offerings.

Additionally, the Opteron processors are intended to deliver increased scalability for virtualisation, with up to 73% more memory bandwidth. This would enable servers to host more virtual machines as well as cope with higher workloads.

New juncture

With businesses increasingly turning to the cloud to reduce costs and optimise their efficiency, AMD added that the new Opteron processors will be ideal suited, as they require half the power per core, which will translate into two-thirds less floor space needed by servers.

“Our industry is at a new juncture; virtualisation has provided a new level of reliable consolidation and businesses are now looking to the cloud for even more agility and efficiency. We designed the new AMD Opteron processor for this precise moment,” enthused Paul Struhsaker, corporate vice president and general manager, Commercial Business, AMD.

AMD also announced the expansion of its 2012 roadmap with the addition of the new AMD Opteron 3000 Series platform. The AMD Opteron 3000 Series is targeted at the ultra-dense, ultra-low power 1P Web Hosting/Web Serving and Microserver markets. The first processor will be the 4-8 core CPU code-named Zurich, expected to ship in the first half of 2012. Zurich is based on the Bulldozer architecture and take advantage of the new Socket AM3+.

The company explained that the AMD Opteron 3000 series offering is designed for hosts who require dedicated servers for their customers.

To the point

“The wait for the most anticipated new product and architecture for servers is over. Leading OEMs are now offering cloud, enterprise and HPC customers a full suite of solutions based on the industry’s most comprehensive server processor portfolio, the new AMD Opteron family of processors which deliver an inspired balance of performance, scalability and efficiency,” concluded Struhsaker.

In recent news, AMD announced that it will be reducing its global workforce by 10% to concentrate on emerging markets and the cloud.
