AMD launches new software development kit
By Ryan Noik 8 August 2011 | Categories: news
AMD has announced its latest AMD Accelerated Parallel Processing (APP) Software Development Kit (SDK) v2.5, which will provide developers with the means to take advantage of the company’s Accelerated Processing Units (APUs).
The company asserted that its APUs provided for advanced capabilities that could greatly enhance the computing experience of users. These included gesture based interfaces, multi-monitor support, 3D entertainment and real-time image stabilization.
The latest version of the SDK is further aimed at enabling developers to reach a broader market by writing applications that run on a variety of device form factors. Manju Hegde, corporate vice president of the AMD Fusion Experience Program, explained that improving performance and programmability on AMD platforms was a key initiative for the company. Hegde elaborated that the company worked closely with developers to help it make the APU the “best possible development platform”.
“With the introduction of the AMD A-Series APUs and these new enhancements to the SDK, AMD is removing hardware barriers and reducing coding complexity to help developers build immersive computing experiences,” said Graham Brown, the chief technology officer at Corel Corporation.
The new software development kit is currently being used by developers who have entered the AMD OpenCL Coding Competition. The contest, which was announced in June at the AMD Fusion Developer Summit, is open to software developers worldwide, with up to $50 000 (R350 000) in prizes up for grabs for winning submissions. The AMD Accelerated Parallel Processing software development kit v2.5 is available and can be downloaded (118 MB for the 32-bit Windows version) from the company’s website.
