AMD today introduced its latest professional graphics cards, the AMD FirePro 2270 and ATI FirePro V5800 DVI. These two graphics processing units (GPUs) have been designed for professionals who need the ability to view and interact with multiple applications at the same time, typically in the medical, financial, design as well as the engineering fields.

 

The AMD FirePro 2270 is the company’s only low-profile, passively cooled, dual-display, triple set support solution graphics card. It boasts a fan-less, energy efficient design that consumes 15 watts maximum power and under 10 watts on average. This GPU also enables efficient multitasking across multiple applications, including graphics intensive applications, assisting in the prevention of system slowdowns. Legacy support for current installations including DisplayPort, DVI and VGA connections is provided.

 

 

Businesses that require a GPU that can power two high-resolution dual link DVI displays and also sporting the ability to stretch one image or application across both screens can opt for the ATI FirePro V5800 DVI. It also delivers a full 30-bit display pipeline to enable increased colour reproduction.

The AMD FirePro 2270 starts at a recommended retail price of $149 (about R1060) in the US and the ATI FirePro V5800 DVI is available from $469 (around R3360), with the company stating that both cards are available from professional graphics retailers around the globe. No local pricing is available yet.

 

AMD also recently announced support for OpenGL 4.1 on select ATI FirePro, ATI FireGL and AMD Radeon graphics processing units (GPUs).
