ASUS clones the Kinect
By Johan Keyter 4 January 2011 | Categories: newsWith Microsoft's motion sensing gaming peripheral for the Xbox 360, the Kinect, making a splash with gamers last year, it was only a matter of time before other companies also tried to capitalise on the idea.
The first out of the starting blocks to try its hand at motion based control is ASUS, who has teamed up with the creators of the Kinect's camera technology, PrimeSense, to bring its version of gesture-based gaming to the PC.
The device looks eerily similar to Microsoft's Kinect and is essentially the same thing except this time it's calling itself the ASUS WAVI Xtion. The system utilises PrimeSense's 3D motion capture technology and pairs it with the Wireless Audio & Video Interaction system (WAVI), to deliver the desired gesture-based effects.
According to its official press release, ASUS is hoping that the, “next generation user interface device developed by ASUS [will] extend PC usage to the living room.” It is not entirely clear how the company aims to do this at this stage, but it stated that the Xtion will bring users multimedia, social networks and new gesture-based games to play around with.
ASUS will be treating showgoers to a first peak at the new device later this week at the Consumer Electronics Show held in Las Vegas.
The WAVI Xtion is scheduled to be released during the second quarter of 2011, with worldwide release expected to take place “in phases”. No pricing details are available as of yet.
