Apple launches Mac App Store
By Hanleigh Daniels 7 January 2011 | Categories: newsApple has announced the opening of its Mac App Store that boasts over 1000 free and paid apps intended for Mac computer users.
As with the App Store (for the iPhone, iPad and iPod touch), Mac App Store users can find new apps, purchase these using their iTunes account, and then download and install them. The Mac App Store is available for Snow Leopard users through Software Update as part of Mac OS X v10.6.6.
“With more than 1,000 apps, the Mac App Store is off to a great start,” said Steve Jobs, Apple’s CEO. “We think users are going to love this innovative new way to discover and buy their favorite apps.”
The Mac App Store currently sports apps in Education, Games, Graphics & Design, Lifestyle, Productivity, Utilities as well as other categories. Users can browse new and noteworthy apps, take a look at staff favourites, search categories and look up top charts for paid and free apps, as well as user ratings and reviews.
Web-based app stores seem to be the flavour of the month with the big tech players, as Google also announced the availability of its Chrome Web Store exactly a month ago, which is an online store boasting a plethora of apps and games for Google’s Chrome web browser.
