Riding your expensive bike to a shady area always means having to disassemble it to lock all the important parts, but a new innovative bike design only utilise a single lock since the bike can be wrapped around the nearest pole or tree.

According to Inhabitat this bicycle uses a ratchet mechanism that enables it to be either rigid or bendable. Once you’ve reached your destination, you simply hop off the bike and push a lever on the frame that allows it to become flexible. You can then wrap it around the nearest pole or bike rack, meaning you can put your lock through both wheels as well as the frame.

Kevin Scott, a final year BSc Industrial Design student from De Montfort University in Leicester, received the runner-up prize in the Business Design Centre New Designer of the Year Award for this unique collapsible bicycle design. He walked off with £500 (around R5 700) as the judges wanted to “encourage the further development of this unique and striking idea.”

“I am now going to take this forward to produce a fully resolved solution and hopefully this will be a stepping stone into a career in the bike designing industry,” Scott stated.

The overall winner of the competition was Tortie Hoare, a BA (Hons) Furniture, Design ad Craftsmanship student from Bucks New University, for her Leatherwork Furniture Collection for which she won £2 000 (about R22 800).
