One of the more interesting developments this week regarding the iPad has been the Apple store, somewhat surprisingly, allowing publisher Big Fish Games to offer its gaming titles on a subscription basis on the popular tablet.

This makes Big Fish the first games publisher to receive permission to pursue this business model, formerly only  available to the likes of magazine and newspaper publishers. The move will enable users to stream the company’s library of casual games on their iPad and pay a monthly fee (initially $5 or about R41, then $7 or about R58 when more games are added). As with apps, Apple will receive 30% of this. Users will however need to be connected to the internet via Wi-Fi or 3G to play the games.

According to Bloomberg, the games publisher will further offer an advertising supported free version of its games service. Users will be limited to thirty minutes of gameplay a day though.

Some examples of the games on offer by Big Fish include Mystery Stories: Mountains of Madness, Rhianna Ford and The Da Vinci Letter, Mystic Diary: Lost Brother and Adventure Chronicles: The Search for Lost Treasure, amongst others.

A special collectors edition of Mystery Case Files: Dire Grove has been
released for the Ipad.

The games producer also recently announced that its Mystery Case Files, which has been played by more than 100 million users worldwide, will debut from this month on the iPad.  The company elaborated that the game integrates movie-quality film clues with its trademark hidden-object-and-puzzle adventure gameplay.

The film portions, which are reminiscent of the movie, The Blair Witch Project, include integrated clues to create an immersive non-linear adventure tailored for any level player. Additionally, the iPad version of Mystery Case Files: Dire Grove will offer a completely new cinematic ending exclusive to iOS.

The game includes approximately eight to twelve hours of interactive gameplay, complete with hidden objects, video clues and puzzles. Gameplay is open-ended, allowing exploration in a non-linear, classic adventure fashion. Further, once unlocked, all the games puzzles and hidden object scenes can be played competitively for point rankings on individual Game Center leaderboards.
