First National Bank (FNB) yesterday announced that it will be extending its FNB Connect 25 cent call rate offering until the 31st of March 2011. The offer was introduced last year November by the bank's internet service provider and allows registered users to make local or international calls to any destination, cellphone or landline, at a flat rate of only 25 cents.

FNB Connect calls are VoIP calls similar to that of Skype. Users have to register for FNB Connect online and then download the app, either for PC or cellphone. Upon registration customers receive R10 free airtime to make outbound calls while already registered users can call each other for free over the internet. The FNB Connect app is also available on the iTunes, Nokia OVI and Android market online stores.

“Our decision to extend the offer from 22 January 2011 to end of March 2011 was informed by the overwhelming customer uptake – proving that the South African consumer is in need of low cost communication,” says Farren Roper, operations manager at FNB Connect.

Since the launch of this new promotion, FNB Connect has seen a monthly traffic increase of 400%. “We have seen an increase in call volumes being sent to South African mobile networks and a significant amount of minutes being sent to Telkom. African destinations also proved to be very popular, with the most popular destination being Zimbabwe,” adds Roper.

The program has been very successful in its limited time on the market and registration is open to anyone, you don't need to be a FNB customer. Users of the app will also be able to send free instant messages (IM's) to other users and will also benefit from SMS's charged at 35 cents each.
