Local internet service provider MWEB today announced that it's upgrading the lines of its 512 Kbps uncapped customers to 1 Mbps lines at no additional monthly cost.

Existing 512 Kbps MWEB subscribes will be automatically upgraded to the speedier offering, which should take effect on the 1st of June.

The first ISP to introduce free upgrades, MWEB says it goal is to allow its uncapped customers a “liberated” internet experience. “It is important that we follow this mantra of Free the Web and keep on innovating and ensuring our products evolve as the South African landscape changes,” said Rudi Jansen, MWEB CEO.

After launching the nation's first affordable uncapped internet solutions last year, MWEB has been keeping abreast of Telkom's recent infrastructure upgrades, hence the free line upgrade.

Subscribers now have the benefit of obtaining a 1 Mbps uncapped (data-only) line for just R299 per month, while an all-inclusive uncapped 1 Mbps account (with line rental included) retails for R599 per month.

“At no extra cost, customers can have a much better experience with smooth video, voice over IP and everything else the Web has to offer. We want to encourage people to get the best out of their connectivity and explore the true wonders of the Internet,” Jansen said.

In addition to increased network performance, MWEB's 1 Mbps offering also includes 300 Wi-Fi minutes to use at local hotspots, an e-mail filter, protected network access and a virus filter. For R15 extra per month users can also gain the benefit of AVG internet security.
