At a media briefing held recently in Tokyo, Fujitsu unveiled its business-centric new Q550 tablet PC, a tablet that is, “designed for the high-security requirements of mobile enterprise computing.” The Q550 will officially launch at CeBIT 2011, starting tomorrow Hanover, Germany, from March 1-5 (later this week).

Unlike most of the consumer tablets we've seen appearing on the market following the iPad explosion, Fujitsu places much emphasis on the fact that the Q550 reaches the stringent security requirements of businesses today, and that it also integrate seamlessly into existing IT infrastructures.

Features such as Advanced Theft Protection (ATP), a platform that is resistant to deep-level hacking, and the optional Trusted Platform Module (TPM), helps protect against data theft.
The security features will be tested by the masses when the tablet goes on sale, but what we can tell you now is that the Q550 will feature an anti-glare 10.1” display, “full work day battery” as well as WLAN, Bluetooth and optional 3G connectivity. The tablet runs on the Windows 7 operating system.

Another feature on the Q550 which definitely sounds useful is that it supports touch-based controls via both pen and your normal finger. That means that while using just your hand, the tablet will respond as a standard touch-enabled device, but when using the included pressure-sensitive pen, the Q550 will automatically recognise it, allowing the user to rest their hand on the screen while writing.

Rajat Kakar, vice president workplace systems at Fujitsu Technology Solutions said, "Many slate PCs on the market today are fun toys, but they don't come anywhere close to addressing the business and security needs that are holding enterprises back from embracing the latest mobile computing technology. This is our sweet spot – and we are targeting the professional and government computing markets with a new slate PC that draws on more than twenty years experience in building mobile computers for enterprise use."

The Q550 is slated to be available globally, with pricing and model specifications to be announced when orders open tomorrow, 1 March.
