Gaming news round-up - The amazing trailers edition
By Johan Keyter 25 February 2011 | Categories: newsThe future of Command & Conquer
Tons of PC gamers around the world hold a soft spot in their heart for the Command & Conquer (C&C) series of real-time strategy games. And although the franchise have had some shaky releases recently, it appears the studio has a future ahead of it through a new EA development studio, Victory Games, with a new game already on the way.
The studio will be headed by Jon van Caneghem, with the studio boss stating, "I can tell you it's a Command & Conquer game for the PC, but we're not yet at a stage where I can go into any details- we'll be prepared to make a more formal announcement later in the year. We're not just working on a game, though. Our general focus is on the future of Command & Conquer. That means updating a lot of the core technology to create a stable base for future development, and leveraging that work on this first game."
The first Skyrim gameplay trailer is amazing
The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim is one of the hottest titles of the year, ushering in a new chapter in the Elder Scrolls series which saw massive success with 2006's Oblivion. Now with a new engine and storyline, Skyrim is looking to be one of Bethesda’s greatest games yet.
Unfortunately, gamers will have a bit of a wait on their hands, with the game slated for a 11/11/2011 release on Xbox 360, PS3 and PC. In the meantime though we can reconcile ourselves with spectacular trailers such as this one, giving us a first glimpse at the beauty of the new game.
New Mortal Kombat banned down under
The upcoming Mortal Kombat revival will like its predecessors, be quite brutal. We're talking intense new Fatalities that are going to make bare handed decapitation look like child’s play, all of course rendered in immaculate HD detail.
The iconic fighting series has always been a magnet for controversy, and this time it seems no different, with the game already receiving a “ban” in Australia. While not technically a ban, the game has been “refused classification” in Australia due to the country’s entertainment ratings board not having a mature or 18+ classification system in place. The highest rating in the current Australian system is a MA15+ rating.
The banning of violent games Down Under is nothing new, but the amusing thing here is that, according to Kotaku, with the Australian dollar at an all-time high, gamers who “illegally” import the title will actually be paying 20-30% less than they would in a retail store. Viva la backdoor imports! The new Mortal Kombat is releasing on Xbox 360 and PS3 on the 19th of April.
Dead Island trailer wows the world
The upcoming open world zombie game Dead Island, recently had its debut trailer go viral on the internet, attracting millions of views and showing that even a zombie game can be emotionally stirring. The game is set on a tropical island suddenly devastated by a zombie outbreak, and puts a lot of emphasis on melee combat. Yes, as in the real world, guns and ammunition won't be randomly strewn around in this game.
The trailer in question shows two parents and their young daughter being attacked by zombies while vacationing on the island, and the stirring sequence has since been heralded by many as one of the best video game trailers ever produced. Check it out below.
