Gaming news round-up - The make your own game edition
By Johan Keyter 21 January 2011 | Categories: newsGears of War coming to Kinect?
The Gears of War series on the Xbox 360 is one of the console's most successful exclusive franchises, out-shined only by the likes of Halo itself. Later this year the third installment in the series will be released in the form of Gears of War 3, and while that has undoubtedly caught all the attention, a small but very interesting Kinect hint recently surfaced.
According to CVG, developers Epic Games recently filed a trademark application for a new title named Gears of War: Exile. Rumours have been circulating that a Kinect-enabled Gears was on the way, but since Epic stated that Gears of War 3 would not feature Kinect support, the smart money is on Exile. The developers haven't made any official announcements yet, but one thing is for sure, Exile does exist, and if it does the probability of it working with Kinect is very big.
Hopefully the rumour holds true, we really want to "air slice" a Locust in two with a chainsaw.
Will there be enough 3DS's?
Nintendo president Satoru Iwata announced earlier this month that the company will ship approximately 1.5 million Nintendo 3DS units in Japan and 4 million units worldwide by the end of March. But according to gaming blog Andriasang, Japanese retailers are worried that stock of the handheld will run out come launch day.
Japanese retailers are apparently telling customers that Nintendo will make 400 000 3DS units available on its 26 February launch day, a number which they say is too low. Meanwhile retailers have urged customers to reserve preorders of the handheld to avoid disappointment. When the Nintendo Wii launched in Japan in December 2006, the console was sold out across the country in its first day.
Mod tools to be included in Skyrim
According to Gamespot, the newest entry in the Elder Scrolls series, Skyrim, will not only feature a new engine and storyline, but will also allow gamers to create their very own stories in the rich game world.
Developers Bethesda confirmed via its official blog that The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim will include a set of comprehensive mod tools known as the Creation Kit (only for the PC version), allowing players to create new levels, characters and stories for the game.
A Bethesda employee wrote on the Skyrim forums, "We've always been impressed with what the community has done with our tools. Like the Elder Scrolls Construction Set for Morrowind and Oblivion, we plan to release Creation Kit so you guys can mod Skyrim."
The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim will be a direct sequel to the immensely popular The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion and will be released on the 11th of November or 11/11/11.
Get those Necromorphs, Sir Knight?
In the latest of a number of unusual series tie-ins, Electronic Arts (EA), has announced that players will be able to access some sci-fi goodness in its latest fantasy epic, Dragon Age II. Strange as it may seem, EA has confirmed that players who purchase the upcoming survival horror shooter, Dead Space 2, will be able to download a special set of armour based on Dead Space protagonist Isaac Clarke.
The suit, known as the Ser Isaac of Clarke armour, is modeled after the infamous Dead Space suit and will feature two new rune slots. Dead Space 2 will be released on the 25th of January while Dragon Age II should be with us early March.
