HP has announced the recall of approximately 70 000 Lithium-Ion batteries used in Hewlett-Packard and Compaq notebook computers. The recall was announced in co-operation with the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission after it was discovered that the batteries could pose a fire or burn hazard to consumers.

The recall comes after two reports of batteries that overheated and ruptured, resulting in fires that caused minor property damage. The CPSC confirmed that the batteries were sold in US electronics stores and via HP online stores. It also confirmed that the batteries were manufactured in China, but did not name a specific manufacturer. 

Consumers are advised to immediately remove recalled batteries from their notebook and contact HP for a free replacement. The models concerned can be found on HP’s website.
