Intel announces new Atom Z670 CPU
By Hanleigh Daniels 12 April 2011 | Categories: newsIntel has announced that its Atom processor Z670 based platform, formerly codenamed “Oak Trail,” is now available and will be available in end user devices as of next month.
More than 35 designs from companies, the likes of Fujitsu and Lenovo, are going to be powered by this new chip, while it will also run on a variety of operating systems (OSs). It has been specifically designed for tablet PCs, enabling increased battery life, fast internet browsing, as well as enhanced performance, especially when it comes to video playback.
This latest chip, running at 1.5 GHz, sports support for a variety of different OSs such as Google’s Android, Intel and Nokia’s MeeGo and Microsoft’s Windows. It can also handle 1080p video decoding, HDMI, as well as Adobe Flash, the latter allowing for rich web-based content and Flash-based gaming.
Since it packs in integrated graphics (Intel’s GMA 600), as well as the memory controller directly onto the processor die, it is 60% smaller than its predecessor with a lower-power design for fanless devices. Additional features include Intel Enhanced Deeper Sleep that saves power when the device that the chip runs isn’t being utilised.
Intel’s latest mobile computing chip also comes with the Intel SM35 Express Chipset, delivering high-speed USB 2.0 support and Intel High-Definition Audio to enable premium quality sound.
The company stated that this processor series can also be employed within a range of other portable embedded designs including mobile clinical assistants, ruggedized industrial tablets and portable point-of-sale systems.
Besides the Atom Z670, Intel is also offering the Intel Atom processor Z650 for embedded devices. It carries a 7-year lifecycle support on Windows and MeeGo operating systems.
This CPU is based upon the company’s leading-edge 32nm process technology, the next-generation “Cedar Trail” platform and will feature improvements in graphics capabilities such as Blu-ray 2.0 support, a dedicated media engine for full 1080p playback as well as additional digital display options the likes of HDMI output and DisplayPort.
New features will include Intel Wireless Music, Intel Wireless Display, PC Synch and Fast Boot. Intel is currently sampling “Cedar Trail” to all major OEMs and ODMs. Users can look forward to a new generation of innovative mobile and desktop designs based on the “Cedar Trail” platform being launched within the second half of this year.
A new Xeon E7 processor family has also recently been unveiled by the CPU maker.
