Intel has announced that it will be launching its 2nd generation Intel Core Processor family on 5 January 2011 at the International Consumer Electronics Show (CES 2011) in Las Vegas.

 

The company revealed several significant design features of this forthcoming CPU family during the annual Intel Developer Forum (IDF) in September this year. Codenamed ‘Sandy Bridge’, the new chips will be based on Intel’s first new ‘visibly smart’ micro-architecture produced using a combined CPU and GPU 32-nanometer process technology with second-generation high-k metal gate transistors.

 

These second generation Intel Core processors include an enhanced version of Intel Turbo Boost Technology, which automatically shifts or reallocates processor cores and processor graphics resources to accelerate performance.

 

Intel’s new processor graphics delivers enhanced visual features focused on areas such as HD video, with the power usage of Sandy Bridge processors (whilst performing HD video processing) being half that of the current generation of Intel Core CPUs.   

 

It was also recently revealed that Panasonic, Sony, Philips and TDK will be receiving the 62nd annual Technology & Engineering Emmy Award during CES 2011 next year, for their contributions to the Blue Laser optical systems for consumer playback.
