Kinect sets Guinness World Record
By Johan Keyter 10 March 2011 | Categories: newsAs most of us know, towards the end of last year Microsoft launched Kinect, its full-body motion sensing gaming peripheral for the Xbox 360. The system allowed players to control games using their body movements, and as record setting new evidence attests, it was more than just a fad.
According to Guinness World Records, the global authority on record breaking feats, Kinect has officially taken the record for the fastest-selling consumer electronic device in the world.
The Kinect peripheral, which includes the Kinect sensor and some bundled games, sold an average of 133 333 units per day, for a total of eight million units sold during its first 60 days on the market, from November 4 2010 to January 3 2011.
It was quite surprising to see a gaming peripheral take the record, outstripping both Apple's iPhone and iPad in sales volumes after launch. It's either a testament to Microsoft's marketing department, or an intriguing new insight into how game conscious the modern world has become.
“The sales figures here speak for themselves. We can confirm that no other consumer electronics device sold faster within a 60-day time span, an incredible achievement considering the strength of the sector,” said Gaz Deaves, editor of Guinness World Records 2011 Gamer's Edition.
