According to Reuters the two tech giants announced that they have signed a cross-licensing patent deal. No further details, such as the financial terms of the agreement, were provided.

Sony kicked off the patent war when it filed patent-infringement claims against LG Electronics at the end of last year, with the US International Trade Commission (ITC) in Washington, as well as with a federal court in Los Angeles. The Japanese company was aiming to block various LG mobile phones from being shipped to the States.  

As has become customary in these type of tech patent battles, LG countered with its own set of patent complaints against Sony. The Korean firm filed a couple of complaints with the US ITC in Washington during February of this year. With these complaints LG was looking to block sales of Sony’s Bravia HDTVs as well as the PS3 game console in the States.

The company claimed that the high-definition Bravia TV range infringed upon four LG patents, whilst Sony’s Blu-ray player sporting tech products, the likes of the PS3, infringed upon another four patents.

"LG and Sony recently agreed to drop patent infringement lawsuits against each other," a spokeswoman at South Korea's LG Electronics stated. Reuters stated that Sony also confirmed this, but would not provide any further details around the licensing deal.

 

In related news Sony, Panasonic, Samsung Electronics and X6D have recently announced their intent to collaborate on the development of a new technology standard for consumer 3D active glasses, under the banner of “Full HD 3D Glasses Initiative.”
