Korean tech firm LG has announced its new Optimus L Series II range of smartphones, which the firm is set to showcase later this month at the forthcoming 2013 Mobile World Congress (MWC) 2013 in Barcelona, Spain.

According to the company, it managed to sell more than ten million Optimus L Series smartphones within the first ten months of the line’s availability, and the company is now looking to continue this sales success via the new L Series II range.

LG stated that it included four new design elements within the L-Style look that characterised the previous generation of devices including the LG Optimus L3 (review) and L7 (review). These additional design elements are seamless layout, laser cut contour, radiant rear design as well as smart LED lighting on the home button.

Beyond the improved styling, LG also introduces new software features with the L Series II such as Quick Button, which allows users to personalise a hotkey on their smartphone to launch virtually any app the likes of the camera, web browser, or music player. A novel feature dubbed Safety Care enables users to quickly share their location via My Location Notice with an emergency contact.

Line-up

The first smartphone within the Optimus L Series II is the Optimus L7 II, with another first for the series - a dual SIM version of the Optimus L7 II - making its debut in Russia during this week. No local release info is available yet.

Availability of the Optimus L3 II that boasts a 3.2" (QVGA) IPS display and 1540 mAh battery, as well as the Optimus L5 II which sports a 4" (WVGA) screen and bigger 1700 mAh battery, will be announced at a later date.

LG has not revealed detailed specs yet for the L3 II or L5 II smartphones, but the key specifications of the Optimus L7 II are:

Memory: 768 MB RAM and up to 4 GB eMMC storage that is expandable via microSD memory card slot
Display: 4.3" (WVGA) IPS touchscreen
Cameras: rear-facing 8 MP with LED flash; front-facing VGA snapper
OS: Android 4.1 (Jelly Bean)
Battery: 2460 mAh
Size: 121.5 x 66.6 x 9.7 mm; 122.2 x 66.6 x 9.7 mm (dual-SIM)

“LG has a history of pushing the envelope when it comes to style and Optimus L Series II builds on this heritage of design innovation,” said Dr. Jong-seok Park, president and CEO of LG Electronics Mobile Communications Company. “By evolving the sophisticated style and premium features of the original Optimus L Series, its sequel is expected to continue the popularity of the L Series around the world.”

In other smartphone related news, BlackBerry recently played its final hand by which the Canadian firm aims to turn its increasing fading mobile fortunes around, when it finally unveiled its new BlackBerry 10 platform along with the BlackBerry Z10 and Q10 smartphones.
