LG has officially unveiled the world’s thinnest OLED television, which is set to make its public debut at a trade show in early September.
 
According to the company the panel, which also measures in at a considerable 31” (until now OLED panels have been relatively small), and is just one tenth of an inch thick. 
 
In addition to this, LG’s panel also supports 3D playback - making it one of the first OLED devices to do so. 
 
At present the OLED panel has no release date or pricing structure attached to it; it is primarily a prototype device. 
 
Although a number of OLED television’s are currently available, they are incredibly expensive. LG’s EL9500 OLED television, which measures in at just 15”, is currently retailing for $2 500 (roughly R19 000). 
 
OLED offers a number of benefits over Plasma, LCD and LED units due to the fact that the technology does not require a backlight to display. It also uses considerably less power and offers a more favourable contrast ratio.
