Microsoft connects armchair and mobile gamers
By Johan Keyter 17 August 2010 | Categories: newsMicrosoft is attempting to put the power of Xbox gaming into the hands of consumers as they revealed that a large list of games and applications are to be supported on Windows Phone 7.
A string of developers are busy designing games for the platform and titles such as Bejeweled, Guitar Hero 5, The Harvest, Max and the Magic Marker and Crackdown 2: Project Sunburst have been confirmed as being among the first wave of games to come to Microsoft's new smartphone operating system. Microsoft Game Studios is set to support the service with content of its own, bringing Xbox fans games such as ‘Halo: Waypoint’ and ‘Crackdown 2’.
Windows Phone 7 is set to feature full integration of Xbox LIVE profiles and options and users will be able to connect to their Xbox LIVE profile and avatar, connect with friends, earn achievements and visit the Xbox LIVE marketplace.
A games hub which is linked to Xbox LIVE will enable users to easily find the game that’s right for them. The service will also include try-before-you-buy demos, Xbox LIVE leaderboards, turn-based multiplayer and Xbox LIVE achievements so gamers can sync their Xbox LIVE gamer accounts with their Windows Phone 7 device.
“Windows Phone 7 takes a different approach to handheld gaming, utilizing Xbox LIVE, Microsoft Game Studios, leading game publishers, and innovative indie developers, to create powerful, shared experience for everyone,” said Marc Whitten, corporate vice president of Xbox LIVE.
Time will tell whether this integration venture will be successful or if Windows Phone 7’s gaming capabilities will go the way of N-Gage.
