News: Motorola reportedly working on own OS

According to InformationWeek (IW), Motorola Mobility is making moves toward developing its own web-based mobile operating system (OS) that will see it competing with Google’s Android OS. This according to a source that is “familiar with the matter”.

IW also stated that Motorola has enlarged its workforce by taking numerous experienced mobile- as well as web engineers on board. These staff additions have come from the likes of Apple and Adobe.

Motorola’s move towards an own OS seems strange since they got their mobile groove back thanks specifically to Android, featured on devices such as the Droid (known as the Milestone in South Africa) and the Flipout.

Last year the tech blog androidandme reported that Motorola acquired Azingo, which has created its own mobile OS dubbed Azingo Mobile 2.0 that is also a Linux-based OS.

With the all of the company’s smartphones and the bulk of its mobile portfolio running on Android, we doubt that the American company will be breaking its successful partnership with Google. However it might, like Samsung with its bada OS, want to have a second OS to fall back on and not put all its smartphone eggs into one OS platform basket.
