Apple’s latest generation iPods were officially launched in South Africa yesterday at the iStore in Sandton.

The updated iPod nano is perhaps the most interesting of the new range as it now features an integrated VGA video camera. The device also features a 2.2" display, a built-in FM radio (finally), a built-in pedometer and some larger memory options. The nano is available in 8 GB and 16 GB versions for R1999 and R2499 respectively.

The new iPod shuffle was also launched with bragging rights as the world’s smallest music player. It’s also the first music player that speaks to you with its VoiceOver function announcing song titles, artist and playlist names. The shuffle is available in 1 GB and 4 GB versions for R599 and R999 respectively.

Apple is pushing the next generation iPod touch’s multi-touch and accelerometer features as unique gaming controls. With Wi-Fi connectivity and access to the App Store with more than 75 000 apps, a large number of them games, it certainly is an appealing media device, but we’re still a little confused as to why it didn’t get a video camera as well. The iPod touch prices from R3298 for an 8 GB version, but you’ll want to go for the 32 GB or 64 GB versions if you want to enjoy the superior graphics Open GL ES 2.0 allows for.
