According to Kotaku, Nintendo's upcoming 3D-enabled handheld gaming device, the Nintendo 3DS, will feature solid-state game storage cartridges that will be able to hold as much data as a dual-layer DVD disc, bragging with a maximum capacity of 8 GB.

The news came when Taiwanese gaming site Gamrade reported that the Taiwan-based memory manufacturer, Macronix, will be producing slim solid-state cartridges with an 8 GB data limit, much more than previously seen on Nintendo handhelds.

It has however been rumoured that Nintendo will be enforcing some sort of 2 GB limit on 3DS games initially though it is unclear how this will be enforced. What may be in store is that we won't be seeing 8 GB 3DS games immediately after launch, but that the capacity may be increased later in the handheld's lifespan.

Either way, it's definitely a huge upgrade, especially given that the Nintendo DS cartridges only supports 512 MB of data storage space.

We'll be sure to follow up when more solid details are available. In the meantime, look forward to the Nintendo 3DS which has a tentative release date of first quarter 2011.
