Apple has officially announced that it will cease to give away free iPhone 4 cases to users at the end of September, commenting that the antenna problem which the cases were intended to address, is smaller than the company originally expected.

Apple CEO Steve Jobs announced in July that the company would give a free bumper case to any iPhone 4 user affected by the device’s loss of signal due to covering the bottom right and corner of the device.

Despite this, the company maintained that there was nothing wrong with the device and that reception issues are common among all smartphones.

The company has now revealed that although it will continue to provide free cases to those users who are genuinely affected by the problem (a small percentage says Apple), the majority of iPhone 4 users will have to go without.

The scandal caused an uproar within the technology community when it broke. In addition to this Steve Jobs handled the situation badly with a number of tersely worded emails and a statement that users were “holding it wrong”.

Although we at TechSmart have not yet had the opportunity to try the iPhone 4 out for ourselves (it has not yet been released locally), we are hoping that a loss of signal will not be an issue for local users.
