Update: According to CNN, Kinect will go on sale in the US on 4 November and will be available globally in time for the December holiday period.

Microsoft has announced the final name for its Project Natal controller-less gaming system, which is going to make its debut at the E3 gaming expo. The motion-based system for the Xbox 360 will be known as Kinect.

This slender black Kinect device contains a camera, audio sensors as well as motion-sensing technology which tracks 48 points of movement on the human body and connects to any Xbox 360 console. It also sports the ability to recognise faces and voices.

Gamers utilising this Xbox 360 add-on will not need to memorise various button combinations said Mike Delman, corporate vice president of Global Marketing for the Interactive Entertainment Business, “You are the controller, you simply step in front of the sensor and Kinect sees you move, hears your voice and recognizes your face.”

“Some people don’t like controllers,” Delman elaborated. “And Kinect makes the gaming and entertainment experience more organic and free-flowing, without any of the barriers that can sometimes keep people from participating.”
