Nokia reached a significant milestone in its Ovi Mail offering this week with 1 million active subscribers. This figure is particularly impressive as the service was launched only six months ago.

Ovi Mail is a free email service, similar to Gmail or Yahoo! Mail, which is primarily targeted at first time email users. Consequently the on-device set-up of the service has proved most popular in emerging economies like India, Indonesia, Mexico, Russia and South Africa, which make up their top five countries in terms of subscriber numbers.

"We have seen a real appetite in Africa, and specifically South Africa, for the type of tailored service offered by Ovi Mail,” says Helen Jarvis, services marketing manager at Nokia South Africa. "Given that a large portion of South Africans do not have access to computers, the quick set-up action, and easy access is perfect for a wide range of consumers including first-time email users."

Ovi Mail is available on Nokia Series 40 device or Nokia S60 device. Ovi Mail is also available on the web at https://mail.ovi.com/.
