Samsung outsells Apple in terms of smartphones
By Hanleigh Daniels 21 October 2011 | Categories: newsAccording to The Wall Street Journal (WSJ), Samsung managed to cross the 20 million smartphone shipment mark with its Android-, bada, and Windows 7-operating smartphones during the quarter that ended 30 September. The Korean tech giant is only expected to release its official financial results next week.
The WSJ stated that Samsung achieved this due to amongst others its strong push into the high-end smartphone market segment with devices such as the Galaxy SII, as well as the ever-increasing popularity of Google’s Android mobile platform.
Samsung didn’t only manage to surpass Apple in terms of smartphone sales (the Cupertino-based tech firm sold 17.07 million iPhones during its fiscal 2011 Q4), but also Nokia. The Finnish phone giant sold 16.8 million smartphones during its financial third quarter. Although this is 38% down compared to the 27.1 million that it sold during this period last year, it is an increase of 1% over last quarter’s 16.7 million.
