According to a report by tech blog Sammobile, Samsung is planning to focus solely on Android and Windows Phone 8 based devices during the rest of 2012.   

Sammobile stated that the motivation for this move with respect to Android is for the firm to maintain its lead position in terms of Android smartphones, with the Korean tech giant already accounting for 44% of all Android-powered smartphones shipped during Q2 2012 according to the IDC.

The focus on Windows Phone OS results from a need for Samsung to snatch more market share away from Nokia, which currently dominates Windows Phone OS device sales. A recent study by analytics firm Localytics puts Nokia’s global share of Windows Phone OS sales at 59%, HTC second at 21% and Samsung third with 13%.

This move will push the release of the first Tizen-powered mobile device to next year. Tizen is the new Linux-based open-source software platform for multiple device developed by Samsung and Intel. Also on the back burner is Samsung’s own bada smartphone OS, with the last bada 2.0-operating devices (Wave 3, Wave M and Wave Y) being announced way back in August 2011.

If this report is accurate it would mean that the rest of 2012 will see the Korean tech giant a lot more focussed in terms of mobile platforms, now only juggling two instead of the current four.  

In related news, Samsung also revealed the specifications behind its latest mobile processor - the Exynos 5 Dual, that has been specifically designed to power high-end tablets. It also announced the local availability of its Wireless Audio with Dock (WAD) range, which is the world’s first dual-docking systems according to the Korean company.
