Samsung, in a joint venture with Starcom and Visiria, is set to launch 30 solar powered billboards in South Africa.

This news comes of the back of findings by the WWF that South Africa’s per capita greenhouse gas emissions rival those of industrialised countries. We are currently the 18th highest emitter of green house gases in the world thanks in large part to our dependence on coal for power.

The backlit billboards will be introduced into lower income communities where reliable power is an issue. Samsung claim that the billboards will result in an annual saving of energy equivalent to the monthly energy consumption of 1,080 households.
