Sony Ericsson launched one of their new eco-friendlier phones as part of their GreenHeart initiative, at their HQ in Paulshof, yesterday.

Although the phone, dubbed the Naite, failed to impress us from a style or tech perspective (it feels a bit 2006), it does manage to incorporate some interesting green innovations.

The phone is made of a minimum of 50% recycled plastic and also makes use of a new low-power charger. The manual for the phone isn’t printed, instead it is included as an “emanual” onboard the phone. Thus the amount of paper used is reduced by 90%, and this impacts the packaging size, which in turn saves on transportation costs. The overall reduction of the Naite’s CO2 footprint is 15% compared to that of the Sony Ericsson C902 Cyber-shot.

SE’s GreenHeart initiative is a strategy to make the company more eco-friendly and reduce their phones’ impact on the environment. Some of the objectives include a pledge to reduce total emissions by 20% across its international operations by 2015. For the same year SE believes that they could reduce full lifecycle CO2 emissions by 15% for all products.

The Naite should hit the shops in October and include a 2.0 megapixel camera, HSDPA, web browser, video calling and media player. SE also previewed three new “regular” phones which you can read about here.
