Sony Mobile Communications (SMC) has announced the latest addition to its Android-powered Xperia range of smartphones - the Xperia E. This mobile will be available in both single as well as dual SIM versions as of Q1 2013. No local pricing and release info is available yet.

The single-SIM version will run Android 4.1 (Jelly Bean) right out of the box, whilst the dual-SIM model will initially operate on Android 4.0 (Ice Cream Sandwich) and will be upgraded to Android 4.1 (Jellybean) soon after its release.

Sony’s Xperia E should fit comfortably in hand and in your pocket since the smartphone measures in at only 113.5 x 61.8 x 11.0 mm and weighs 115.7 g. It appears to be aiming for the lower end of the mid-range spectrum, seeing that the smartphone is powered by a single-core 1 GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon MSM7227A processor and boasts a 3.5" (320 x 480; 165 ppi) touchscreen.

Also onboard is a 3.2 MP autofocus camera and HD Voice quality that Sony asserts will make phone calls sound much clearer since this technology also sports noise cancellation that filters out background noise.

The Japanese firm further included a handy data usage application as well as an extended standby mode that will apparently boost the device’s standby time by up to four times. In addition, the Xperia E models also come equipped with enhanced sound quality thanks to the built-in Walkman application that incorporates Sony’s xLOUD audio technology, 3D surround sound as well as a manual equalizer.

“Consumers looking to take their first step into the world of Xperia smartphones would be well advised to look at Xperia E or Xperia E dual. They are perfect for those seeking affordable access to the quality and functionality more traditionally associated with high-end Android smartphones,” said Calum MacDougall, director of Xperia Marketing at Sony Mobile Communications.

In related news, Sony also recently announced a software update (V2.0) for its PS Vita gaming console that will bring PlayStation Plus to the device, along with a tempting list of free Vita games.
