News: Sony will not be first with its next generation console

Following Capcom Europe chief operating officer David Reeves’ prediction that we’ll see the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 successors within two to three years, Sony has weighed in on the next generation console debate.

In an interview with develop Sony Worldwide Studios head Shuhei Yoshida stated that they (Sony) aren’t likely to be the company to kick off the next generation of console gaming. Yoshida said that one of Sony’s rivals, either Nintendo or Microsoft, will release its next generation consoles first.

“Looking from the outside, it was Microsoft that released the first of this generation of consoles,” Yoshida stated. “Naturally, in my opinion, Microsoft will make the first move.”

“Or, because Nintendo’s approach was not to upgrade much on its basic hardware – Wii doesn’t even support HD resolution – so they might be the first to move,” he continued. “Probably the watch should be on these companies, in my opinion. Because PS3 was later than Xbox, and is more powerful, so it has a longer lifespan.”

This might not happen as quickly as Reeves predicts though as Chris Lewis, Microsoft’s executive VP of Interactive Entertainment in Europe stated in an interview with gamesindustry.biz that Kinect arrived during the Xbox 360’s mid-lifecycle and that the company sees the motion-based system adding at least another five years to the console’s lifespan.
