According to Gamespot, the iconic Tomb Raider gaming franchise is set for a much needed revival next year in the form of well, Tomb Raider.

Developers Crystal Dynamics today announced that it is working on a new installment for the series, an origins story dealing with the start of Lara Croft's famous career. In a move reminiscent of recent title revivals the new game will simply be named Tomb Raider.
 
Not too much details are available concerning plot thus far, but Crystal Dynamics did drop the following teaser. "After a brutal storm destroys the boat she was travelling on, a frightened young woman is left washed ashore on an unknown beach. On her own but not alone she has only one goal, to survive."
 
Studio head Darrel Callagher also stated that fans should, "forget everything you know about Tomb Raider."
 
The successful series have over the years spawned several sequels and even went blockbuster with two Tomb Raider movies being produced. Here's to hoping Crystal Dynamics can keep the series going, the story definitely sounds like new grounds for Croft fans.
 
No release date or platform specific information has been released thus far. The game's first big reveal is scheduled to take place in the January issue of Game Informer and we'll be sure to keep you up to date of any developments.
