Toshiba unveils new tablet at MWC
By Hanleigh Daniels 16 February 2011 | Categories: newsToshiba Computer Systems has announced its plan to bring a new tablet featuring the latest Android platform (Honeycomb) to market. This tablet’s capacitive screen size, like that of the new Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1 measures 10.1" (1280 x 800 pixels), while the device also offers embedded GPS and two cameras.
Video and audio enhancement technologies
This Toshiba Tablet is powered (just like the Galaxy Tab successor and Motorola Xoom) by a dual-core Nvidia Tegra 2 processor and it boasts Adaptive Display technology which constantly adjusts parameters such as brightness and contrast according to the ambient lightening conditions. This enables the best image quality to be delivered without requiring the user to change any parameters manually.
The company’s Resolution+ technology is also integrated as standard. This technology enhances the quality of standard definition videos, so that these are better displayed on the tablet’s high-definition (720p) screen. Excellent sound quality is achieved via Toshiba audio enhancements that optimise sound output based on the surrounding environment’s noise levels.
Connectivity
Toshiba’s new tablet will support Mobile Broadband (3G), a built-in gyroscope and accelerometer sensor, integrated GPS and a two megapixel front-facing camera and five megapixel rear-facing camera.
Multiple connectivity options are on offer with this tablet, including an HDMI port to showcase your high resolution photos and HD video on your HDTV, a USB 2.0 port for connecting add-on devices such as a portable hard-drive and a mini USB port. Additionally, there is also an SD card slot to expand on the tablet’s storage capabilities and transfer your multimedia files between devices as well as 802.11n Wi-Fi.
“The new tablet based on Android consequently continues Toshiba’s strategy in the European tablet market,” said Marco Perino, general manager, Digital Product Division, Toshiba Europe.
“While the FOLIO 100 is targeted at users looking for an inexpensive tablet that offers up-to-date audio, video and internet browsing capabilities, the new tablet, with its even more sophisticated audio and video features and its advanced hardware specifications is positioned in the high-end tablet segment.”
Toshiba is looking to expand its tablet range with this next generation tablet in Europe, the Middle East as well as Africa during the first half of 2011. No local pricing info is available as of yet.
