Vodacom brings internet to TV
By Staff Writer 11 February 2011 | Categories: newsMany South Africans access the internet via celllphone, but what about via TV? Vodacom believes its WebBox is set to change the lives of many South Africans, proving affordable and easy internet access using the customer’s existing television set.
The portable WebBox was developed specifically for customers in emerging markets, where technology and cost barriers exclude many from accessing the internet. It is a sleek, unique keyboard that comes with a SIM card and a built-in modem, enabling users to navigate between services which include internet browsing, SMS and email messaging. Other features include FM radio and an online photo album as well as games, video and music players.
It also runs the Opera Mini browser which compresses data by up to 90% providing much faster and more affordable internet browsing.
“I’m thrilled about our latest innovation because it’s going to change the face of Internet connectivity in South Africa. It is estimated that just over 10% of the South African population has access to the Internet; this device will ensure that Internet access is available to many more South Africans who previously had limited or no access,” said Romeo Kumalo, commercial director at Vodacom South Africa.
