The time has finally come for South African Xbox 360 players to connect to the world via Xbox LIVE while experiencing the motion sensing prowess of the Kinect.

Last night Xbox South Africa held its long anticipated Kinect and Xbox LIVE launch event, toted as the biggest event in Xbox history since the console launched locally four years ago. TechSmart was there to get the scoop on the latest offerings from the world of Microsoft.

Launching alongside Kinect is something that thousands of South African Xbox 360 gamers have been waiting for for years, official Xbox LIVE support for South Africa. In the past local gamers who wanted to connect to the service needed to use international email and home addresses, resulting in rampant confusion, but luckily no more.

Xbox LIVE is an online service which allows Xbox users to play online against other people from around the world. The service also allows Xbox users to download premium extra content such as new add-on's for games, free game demos, access the Games Marketplace and update your Gamerscore and Avatar alongside a ton of additional content.

Speaking at the launch event, Robin Burrowes, Xbox LIVE product manager for Europe, Middle East & Africa, said Xbox LIVE is about, “building communities and connecting people to each other and to create great content”.

As long as you have an Xbox 360 and a broadband internet connection, gaining access to the world of Xbox LIVE is now easier than ever before.

An Xbox LIVE Gold 12-month membership is available from today for R599 while a 3-month membership will cost R199.

We'll be enjoying local Xbox LIVE from today onwards and we'll be hoping to see an increase in fellow South Africans on the servers soon. Be sure to also check out our accompanying Kinect launch article
