Google owned YouTube celebrates its seventh birthday this week. The world’s most popular video sharing site was founded by Chad Hurley and Steve Chen in May 2005 and was acquired by the web search giant 18 months later for a cool $1.76 billion.

The site has shown tremendous growth since, with its 800 million global users watching more than three billion hours of video clips per month. Subscribers are uploading 72 hours of video to the site every minute, translating to three whole days of footage being uploaded per minute compared to last year’s two.

“In May 2005 we first shared YouTube with the world. Seven years later, you’re the ones doing the sharing! We’re so honored that you’ve used YouTube to share how-to tips, political moments, home videos, comedy, music, and so much more,” a post on the company’s official blog read.
