According to the Associated Press, the world's first daily iPad only newspaper, simply named The Daily, is expected to launch on the 19th of January.

Citing anonymous sources, the digital publication, owned by media giants News Corp., will makes its debut at an event at the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art next week. Apple CEO Steve Jobs as well as News Corp. CEO Rupert Murdoch are scheduled to appear.

News Corp. is the world’s third largest media company and owns newspapers such as The Sunday Times, The New York Post, The Times and The Wall Street Journal.

It is as of yet unclear how much a subscription to the daily will cost, or if it will be available free of charge to iPad owners. Murdoch is reported to have invested as much as $30 million and a staff of around a hundred people in The Daily, the first digital daily newspaper made specifically for a tablet.

The Daily will cover general news, culture and entertainment and will include video reporting as well. The venture is an attempt by Murdoch to step up digital revenue as that of traditional print has fallen dramatically over the past few years.

And even though The Daily is the first tablet-only newspaper, it won't be alone in the iPad newspaper market. The New York Times offers a free app for the iPad, installed on about 1.5 million tablets while USA Today also sports a free iPad version of its newspaper, installed on about 1.25 million tablets thus far.

If nothing else, The Daily is sure to be a great learning experience for how media can transcend from ink and paper to the liquid crystal displays of today.

News Corp. was recently in the spotlight after MySpace, the flailing social networking site owned by Murdoch, fired 500 people, almost half its staff, as a cost cutting effort.
