Got about 400 000 photos and don’t know where to store them? We have now crossed to 1 TB worth of storage on microSD cards, thanks the folks at Western Digital, who unveiled this new storage at Mobile World Congress, currently underway in Barcelona, Spain. Its full name doesn’t exactly roll off the tongue - dubbed the SanDisk Extreme UHS-I microSDXC card.

With 4K recording now almost a regular feature on cameras and smartphones, the 1 TB storage can come in handy. If transfer speed is a concern, how about 160 MB/s, nearly half the time it takes standard UHS-I microSD cards to transfer files, according to Western Digital.

These cards are coming to shops, at least Stateside, in April, but not for cheap. You will need to cough up $450 for the privilege of owning a 1 TB card, with a 512 GB card going for $200.

Western Digital wasn’t the only company that had a 1 TB microSD card on show, since Micron also put forth the c200 microSDXC UHS-I card. This leverages Micron’s 96-layer 3D quad-level cell (QLC) NAND technology, with transfer speeds up to 100 MB per second read and 95 MB per second write performance speeds, according to Micron. No word on price, but it should be available in Q2 in select markets.
