$220 upgrade kit will add eye tracking to HTC Vive
By Robin-Leigh Chetty 2 May 2017 | Categories: newsIf you own a HTC Vive, the time for an upgrade is now. At least according to one of the startups in the company's Vive X accelerator - 7invensun. The Beijing-based developer recently unveiled the aGlass, which is a pair of eyepieces that can be placed inside one's HTC Vive headset.
The aGlass comprises of three interchangeable lenses, with the eyepieces connected to the Vive system via USB and capable of reading the pupil movement of the wearer with the aid of infrared lights and sensors. The eyepieces are set to retail for roughly $220 in select regions, but availability in South Africa is very much up in the air, especially as the Vive isn't obtainable through normal retail channels.
Nevertheless the introduction of eye tracking is a significant step, as it should improve the virtual reality experience. It could also mean an improvement in visuals for developers, as a game or app can de designed to up the quality of the image only in the area that the wearer's eye is focused.
