After The Amazing Spider-Man 2 released in 2014, Sony Pictures had detailed plans for several spin-off films, as well as a third movie in the rebooted trilogy. Those plans got scrapped, as the second Spider-Man was universally viewed as a failure. Now, the Webslinger is set for yet another reboot, starting with a brief appearance in this year's Captain America: Civil War. Along with a revamped Peter Parker, reports suggest Sony and Marvel could co-produce a Venom spin-off film.

The villain has always been a fan favourite in the comic books, and any chance to forget Topher Grace (That 70s Show) as Venom in Spider-Man 3 would be most welcome. According to the Hollywood Reporter, the Venom spin-off would exist separately from any storylines featured in the 2017-scheduled Spider-Man reboot. It is believed that Dante Harper, who wrote the first draft for highly underrated Edge of Tomorrow, will pull duty on the screenwriting front. Added to this, long time Spider-Man producers Avi Arad and Matt Tolmach are also attached to the project.

At the moment no further detail on the script is known, but we'd personally like to see the Agent Venom comic book series used as a reference for this proposed movie, or perhaps even bring in other symbiotes like Carnage. Regardless of which direction they go, the Spider-Man franchise is one that could use an injection of something different besides the old "with great power, come great responsibility" trope.
