One month ago, Apple held its Spring showcase event, unveiling the all-new iPad Pro, and iPhone 6s and 6s Plus. Perhaps conspicuous in its absence was the iMac, which was rumoured to debut prior to the event itself. But that changed this morning, as Apple just lifted the covers on its new additions to the iMac Retina Display lineup, a 4K 21.5" and 5K 27" offering.

Welcome to the family

Starting with the smaller of the two, the 21.5" iMac model touts a 4096x2304 resolution and 9.4 million pixels, which is 4.5 times more than the standard 21.5" iMac model, according to Apple. Moving up to the 5K 27" iMac, which Apple says has the largest display resolution of any AIO PC to date at 5120x2880, and sporting a total of 14.7 million pixels.

Along with different quality displays, the two new iMac additions sport unique internal specifications. The 21.5" model features a 5th-generation Intel Core processor, accompanied by Intel Iris Pro graphics. A look inside the 27" iMac will reveal a 6th-generation Intel Core processor and AMD-powered graphics configuration.

In terms of memory, Apple has rolled out a new setup powered by its Fusion Drive software. As such, Apple will offer a choice of either 1 TB of onboard storage, with 24 GB of flash for loading and accessing more commonly used applications. Added to this are 2 TB or 3 TB storage orientations, with 128 GB flash to call upon.

Apple's new iMacs are already available for pre-order in the US, but there is no word on when they will land in South Africa. Pricing (in the States) for the 5K 27" model starts at $1 800, with $2 000 and $2 300 versions (based on Fusion Drive setup). The 4K 21.5" option is also available in three models, starting off at $1 100, as well as $1 300 and $1 500 priced flavours.
