Apple set to drop Intel for Macs
By Staff Writer 3 April 2018 | Categories: newsSome bad news for Intel as Apple is said to replace all Intel chips in Mac computers, starting in 2020. Bloomberg reports sources familiar with the matter noting that the decision has been approved by management, and that the move will see Apple move away from the processor roadmap set by Intel, towards one they can control themselves.
It will also allow Apple to integrate their Macs, iPads, iPhones and Watches better, with the Macs currently the only product running on another manufacturer’s processor. Apple makes their own processors and must be quite confident of their capabilities if they are willing to drop a supplier as big as Intel. With different processors inside their machines, Bloomberg believes it will help Apple to stand out from the crowd, since the rest of the big guns, HP, Lenovo and Dell, all mainly use Intel processors.
As can be expected, Intel stocks took a punch to the gut, especially since Apple is responsible for a sizeable 5% of Intel revenue. Intel was down as much as 9% at one stage, recovering slightly afterwards, according to Bloomberg.
