The recent hate-filled events in Charlottesville in the States have given Americans a lot to think about, compounded by US President Trumps’ strange response to the protests. One CEO that is unequivocal about the pernicious effect of hate-groups is Apple’s Tim Cook. In a note sent out to Apple employees on Wednesday, obtained by Recode, Cook condemns the white supremacist, stating, “Hate is a cancer, and left unchecked it destroys everything in its path”.

Cook also took President Trump to task, writing, “I disagree with the president and others who believe that there is a moral equivalence between white supremacists and Nazis, and those who oppose them by standing up for human rights. Equating the two runs counter to our ideals as Americans.”

Putting his money where his mouth is, Cook promised contributions from Apple of $1 million each to the Southern Poverty Law Center and the Anti-Defamation League. Moreover, Apple will also match its employees’ contribution to these and other organisations two-for-one. It also seems like iTunes will be mobilised for donations to the Southern Poverty Law Center in upcoming days.

Cook ends the letter by noting, “These have been dark days, but I remain as optimistic as ever that the future is bright. Apple can and will play an important role in bringing about positive change.”
