BMW adds performance model to 2018 electric car lineup with i3s
By Robin-Leigh Chetty 29 August 2017 | Categories: newsAs BMW readies to showcase its latest vehicles and concept cars at the Frankfurt Auto Show next month, the Bavarian manufacturer has already begun to reveal some details about next year's lineup. To date, we've heard about the BMW M5, but now it's time to turn our attention to their electric vehicles, and in particular the all-electric i3.
For 2018, BMW has updated the look and interior stylings of the i3, along with introducing a new sportier model in the form of the i3s. To that end, the new i3s delivers a boosted 137 kW of power from its lithium-ion battery, compared to the regular i3's 126 kW. The new model also sits lower and wider than the standard version, at 10 mm and 40 mm respectively. It also sports new 20" rims to accompany the more performance-driven styling.
When engaging the Sport Mode, the i3s can reach 100 km/h from a standstill in 6.9 seconds, and has a top speed of 160 km/h. In terms of driving range, it can muster up to 280 kilometres depending on driving style on conditions, with a range extender available (for both models) to push things a further 180 kilometres.
At this stage, now word from BMW South Africa on when, or indeed if, the 2018 i3 and i3s will be landing locally. If the company is serious about electric vehicles on South African roads, we hope they do.
