We asked professional photographer, Simon du Plessis about a cheap solution/piece of equipment that he makes us of on a regular basis. With his speciality being wildlife and sports, he didn’t disappoint.   

Simon du Plessis: Nature or sports photographer don’t always get to choose when they have to be out there creating photographs. Protection against the weather becomes a must have instead of a nice to have, so the usual raincoat for yourself and your camera, as well as a thick insulated jacket and beanie against the cold are required.

But your hands can also take a beating being exposed to the elements and holding onto the cold metallic surfaces of camera equipment and monopods or tripods. To help me against the cold numbing the feeling in my hands, I use a pair of cheap fleece gloves bought at a department store, and then just partly cut the tips off the thumb and index finger of the right hand so I can feel the focus and shutter buttons of my camera. Warm hands are very conducive to avoiding camera shake!
